"Maca" is the popular name of the plant Lepidium meyenii of the Cruciferous family, which includes the well-known vegetables cauliflower and broccoli, as well as mustard and turnips. The biologically active components are many, but perhaps the most important in terms of impact and unique only to the species Lepidium meyenii are the alkaloid macaridine and macaenes - the unsaturated fatty acids of maca. Research unequivocally indicates that macaridine is the most potent bioactive alkaloid in the plant and one of the main reasons for consuming maca supplements.
Originally, people started consuming maca as an aphrodisiac to increase libido and strengthen sexual function. It is interesting to note that maca does not improve libido through hormonal regulation, but affects the conduction of neurons, and it is for this reason that it works on both sexes.
The action of maca increases cumulatively after regular use for at least 4 weeks, reaching its peak after the eighth week.
Macaenes – the unique fatty acids of the maca plant, positively affect men's prostate health in a different way than usual. Researchers suggest that maca reduces the level of zinc in the prostate, which is responsible for the transformation of testosterone into DHT. By blocking the anabolic effects of DHT on prostate cells, maca helps prevent prostate enlargement.
Maca also improves cognitive function and reduces anxiety by protecting neurons from oxidative stress and neurotoxins.
