Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable native to the Andes region of Peru. Maca root is also known as "Peruvian ginseng", although it is not a member of the same botanical family as ginseng. Maca is eaten as a food and is believed to stimulate energy and libido.
Commonly added to smoothies, juices and shakes, the ground root powder can also be used as an ingredient in coffee, chocolate or oils. In Peru, the whole maca root is often added to soup and oatmeal, roasted and eaten as a vegetable, or made into a fermented drink known as "chica de maca."
